TOP SCIENCE STUDENTS COMPETE IN REGIONAL STEM RESEARCH PAPER COMPETITION

More than 80 students from Minnesota and North Dakota present original research virtually

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

[ST. PAUL, MN, March 18, 2020] -- Students who had planned to gather at Benilde-St. Margaret’s School on March 26 to compete in the North Central Regional Junior Science & Humanities Symposium (JSHS) will now compete online. JSHS is an annual STEM research paper competition for high school students in Minnesota and the Dakotas.

This year, due to COVID-19 mitigation efforts, the Minnesota Academy of Science is asking students to upload audio files and slide presentations with their research papers. STEM professionals serving as judges will assess student materials online from home instead of in-person.

“Students have worked so hard on their research and we can’t wait to see what they have done,” said Program Director Sara Gomez. “We appreciate their flexibility as we all look for safe ways to continue working and learning during a challenging time.”

North Central JSHS is one of 48 regional symposia serving more than 10,000 U.S. students annually. Students advanced to this regional-level competition after evaluation by research paper review teams across Minnesota and the Dakotas. They will compete for $4,500 in scholarships and the chance to participate in the National JSHS competition administered by the National Science Teachers Association.

The Minnesota Academy of Science estimates being able to announce the Regional Finalists at mnmas.org by March 30.  At the national level, 230 students compete for significant scholarship awards. National JSHS was scheduled to be held April 15-18, 2020, in Norfolk, Virginia. Event planners have announced that they will hold the national competition virtually.
