It is with great sadness that the staff and Board of Directors of the Minnesota Academy of Science (MAS) learned that Kristen Barry has announced her intention to step down from her role as Executive Director of the MAS, effective May 30, 2025. MAS is a statewide nonprofit organization committed to connecting Minnesotans of all backgrounds with resources and opportunities to engage in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning, research, and communication - and to recognize excellence in these areas. MAS’ programs include team competitions, STEM project showcases and mentoring and enrichment programs that promote STEM inquiry and research.

Kris started at MAS on July 1, 2024, bringing with her a wealth of experience in the educational sector building relationships between diverse entities such as schools, community organizations and government agencies. During her nearly year-long stint at MAS, Kris was instrumental in garnering more support for the Minnesota Academy of Science. She helped drive initiatives that have strengthened the organization’s infrastructure, day-to-day operations, funding, events and programming. She helped lead the staff through another successful year of hosting events like the Science Bowl, Minnesota State Science and Engineering Fair, Winchell Undergraduate Research Symposium, to name a few. She led with a strong work ethic, positive attitude and built good relationships with the staff, Board members and key partners.
“It has been a tremendous honor to serve MAS over the past year”, said Barry. “In that time, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside a passionate and committed team, and of supporting an organization whose mission I deeply value. I am grateful for the opportunity to have contributed to the important work of inspiring and supporting Minnesota’s next generation of scientists, educators, and leaders.”
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the enthusiasm, dedication and contributions Kris has provided the MAS. We will miss her cheerful leadership and wish her the very best as she navigates the next steps in her life’s journey. We continue to remain dedicated and are excited for the future of MAS, as we work with our supporters, volunteers, sponsors, investors, program partners and participants and other stakeholders in our mission to advance STEM opportunities and enrichment for all Minnesotans.
