Minnesota Undergraduates Present Research at Science Symposium

St. Paul, MN [April 15, 2022] - Over 70 undergraduate students will present their original research on April 23 at Hamline University during the 34th Annual Winchell Undergraduate Research Symposium. The annual science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) research symposium is organized by the Minnesota Academy of Science (MAS) and supported by regional colleges.

Students representing 16 public and private colleges in Minnesota and Iowa will present their original STEM research in oral and poster sessions and receive feedback from professionals. Students will attend breakout sessions, including graduate school and professional panels. Attendees will also learn about how industrial companies work toward sustainability goals in a keynote address by Dr. John Banovetz, the Executive Vice President, Chief Technology Officer and Environmental Responsibility at 3M.

“Since undergrad students have been able to return to doing research in the lab and the field and elsewhere, there’s real enthusiasm for them to present it at the Winchell Symposium and get valuable experience sharing it with STEM professionals and their peers,” said program coordinator Kristine Fowler. “This experience can serve as the foundation of a lifetime of scientific communication.”

Institutions with participating students include: Bemidji State University, Bethel University, College of St. Benedict - St. John's University, Concordia College - Moorhead, Concordia University - St. Paul, Crown College, Hamline University, Luther College, Macalester College, North Hennepin Community College, Rochester Community and Technical College, St. Catherine University, St. Mary's University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota - Twin Cities, University of Northwestern - St. Paul, and the University of St. Thomas.

Founded in 1873, MAS is a statewide 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to providing opportunities for Minnesotans of all backgrounds to engage in STEM  learning, inquiry, research, and networking. MAS sponsors STEM education programs and events for students in preschool through college.
