Wayzata Central Team 1 Wins Middle School Science Bowl

- 2019 MN Regional Science Bowl for Middle School Students Champion

Will compete in National Finals in Washington, D.C.

 

February 9, 2019, St. Paul, MN – Wayzata Central Middle School - Team 1 defeated Eden Prairie Central - Team 1, to win the championship of Minnesota Academy of Science’s Minnesota Regional Science Bowl for Middle School Students at the University of St. Thomas-School of Engineering on February 9th.  They won a team trophy, individual medals and will represent Minnesota in the upcoming Department of Energy's National Science Bowl, April 25 - April 29, 2019 in Washington, D.C. 

 

Competing for Wayzata Central Middle School are Khoi Le, Samarth Ram, Matthew Chen, Sidarth Gazula, Aneesh Swaminathan. Their coach is Michelle Reinke. This team worked together to place 1st among 22 teams competing in the tournament. 

 

A total of 120 students and their coaches from 22 teams representing 12 schools participated in the tournament.  Teams spent months preparing for the event that features head-to-head competition in a fast-paced question and answer format similar to the TV show, Jeopardy. The students were quizzed on questions in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Space Science, Energy, Mathematics and Physics. 

 

The schools include:  Barton Open Elementary School, Eden Prairie Central Middle School, Dugsi Academy, Field Elementary, Jackson Middle School, Minnetonka Middle School West,  Parnassus Preparatory Charter School, Plymouth Middle School, Sandburg Middle School, Scott Highlands Middle School, Wayzata Central Middle School, and Wayzata West Middle School.

Congratulations to Barton Open Elementary School -Team 2 for winning the 2019 Civility Award for their excellent sportsmanship.  

 

The Minnesota Regional Science Bowl for Middle School Students is a program of the Minnesota Academy of Science.  The Minnesota Academy of Science supports Minnesota scientists at every stage of their development, providing a vital forum for scientific inquiry and discussion that reaches thousands of Minnesotans annually.  The tournament is sponsored by generous contributions from , Ecolab FoundationVerizon Wireless, University of St. Thomas-School of Engineering  Hardenbergh Foundation, General MillsSeagate, Medtronic, Cray Inc., General Dynamics, Diasorin, and theUnited States Department of Energy
